00200	Dear Mr. Thorne,
00300
00400 I have enclosed some examples of my computer music printing system. The final
00500
00600	form of the Bonporti-Smith work is printed by conventional photo-lithography methods. The
00700
00800	over-sized original of each page was produced by the computer and then photographically
00900
01000	reduced by 40%. The photo and press work for this kind of copy comes to about
01100
01200	$16 to $23 per page (500 copies). All the other copy enclosed is produced by
01300
01400	a XEROX machine hooked directly to the computer. I consider these as proof
01500
01600	sheets (not up to publication standards) but completely adequate for almost any
01700
01800	performance purposes.
01900
02000 The individual parts are produced by my automatic part extractor. Most of
02100
02200	the standard transpositions are available (the computer takes less than a second
02300
02400	to transpose a full page.)
02500
02600 It is difficult to judge exact costs, but for experimental purposes I have
02700
02800	worked out a price list for the production of these XEROX sheets. The prices are based
02900
03000	on the use of student labor (working as research assistants at c.$5/hr) plus a little for
03100
03200	the computer lab's overhead. (This work is loosely considered "research" and there are
03300
03400	no charges for computer use at this time.)
03500
03600 .80 per line for scores
03700 .25 per line for parts from a computerized score.
03800
03900	Thus the charge for score and parts to the enclosed Bach Prelude and Fugue would
04000
04100	be in the neighborhood of $200 - $250. Multiple copies can be produced at regular
04150
04175	XEROX prices, c. .04/page.
04200
04300 Depending on the availability of student help, the Bach work could be
04400
04500	turned out in 2 to 5 weeks. One very important advantage of this system is that
04600
04700	once the composer has proof read the score, the parts will surely be correct.
04800
04900	Usually the only editing of parts necessary is to add some of the dynamics and improve
05000
05100	the visual aspects of the layout.
05200
05300 In our phone conversation I believe I mentioned that Walter Anderson, of
05400
05500	the N.E.A. music division, expressed interest in my system as a means of improving the
05600
05700	circulation of American music. Perhaps ACA could convince him to sponsor a pilot
05800
05900	project to print ACA works using some of the funds that are given out to composers to pay copyist fees.
06000
06100 No matter what the source of the funds, I would be interested in trying a few
06200
06300	projects. Of course I am not in a position to do a massive amount of work but it
06400
06500	is to my benefit to try my system on a variety of pieces.
06600
06700
06800
06900
07000
07100 Very sincerely,
07200
07300
